Sacking Erik ten Hag ‘will cost Man United £9m in compensation’

Sacking Erik ten Hag will likely reportedly Manchester United £9m in compensation.

The Dutchman will reportedly be dismissed after the FA Cup final on Saturday, regardless of whether or not United beat Manchester City.

Ten Hag has a year left on his original three-year deal, worth £9m in wages.

The Sun claims he will be due £9m if he is given the boot, unless there is a reduction in his wage due to failing to qualify for the Champions League.

He will reportedly face a pay cut to £6.75m per year if he stays, as per ESPN, due to missing out on the Champions League – and that could therefore be the repriced pay-out clause.

Ten Hag is set to lose his job even if he wins the FA Cup, The Guardian have reported.

The Dutch coach has endured a difficult second season at Old Trafford, finishing eighth in the Premier League – the club’s lowest finish since 1990 – and falling short in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

He guided them to third place and a Carabao Cup win in his first season, but a litany of on-pitch and off-field issues have seen them crumble.

Has he got any crunch talks scheduled with the club’s hierarchy? ‘No, we already did (talk) and on Sunday I will go on holiday. I think I deserve it,’ Ten Hag said in his pre-match press conference/

‘It is not necessary [to get assurances from INEOS]. We will go for next season.

‘Of course, we are together. Since January they have been part of this club and they want us to win trophies.

‘This club didn’t win many trophies in the last 10 years, so now we have the second opportunity in two years and it is a big opportunity to win another trophy.’

At least Ten Hag will have more players available to him for this match than he has for most of the season.

That includes Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, the ideal centre-back pairing, meaning Casemiro could be dropped for the game.

Having once ruled the roost in Manchester, United go into their clash with City as huge underdogs.

Last season they lost 2-1 to an Ilkay Gundogan brace, with the midfielder opening the scoring after 12 seconds – the quickest-ever FA Cup final goal.

This time they are hoping to prevent Pep Guardiola’s side from becoming the first team in history to win consecutive league and FA Cup doubles.
