Matteo Moretto Transfer Column: Atletico targets & Man City open to loanee

Matteo Moretto gives Football España exclusive information on the latest deals dominating the papers in Spain, as revealed in Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing.

I don’t have any information about Barcelona potentially bringing in an assistant to Hansi Flick due to the language barrier. The only thing I know is that Flick will bring two assistants and that the official announcement is expected early this week. They tell me that Ivan Rakitic is also impossible as an option because he has just moved to Saudi Arabia. Then another suggestion was Domenec Torrent, but I have been told that he wants to fulfil his contract at Club Atletico de San Luis.

There is nothing new to date in terms of Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer, who Atletico enquired about in January. Wieffer, Matt O’Riley and Mikel Merino are all players who are on the shortlist at the Metropolitano, but none of the three are more advanced than the other as it stands.

The club’s plan is to rejuvenate the squad, so I don’t think they will go for players with too much experience. We have to see if Atletico Madrid also find a solution for Saul Niguez. The 29-year-old is on his way out of the club after 16 years (two on loan at Rayo Vallecano and Chelsea) because they have told me that he is at the end of a cycle, regardless of what else happens with their transfer plans.

Those working on Yan Couto’s situation tell me that anything is possible. The Brazilian defender has haf a brilliant season at Girona, making it into the national team, and reaching 10 assists. He’s been there for the last two seasons, and it’s been a massive success. As of today, it is not likely that Couto will return to Manchester City, rather it is more probable that he will stay at Girona or be sold.
