Vincent Kompany ‘targets Liverpool defender’ as part of Bayern’s summer rebuild

Vincent Kompany has identified a Liverpool defender as one of his key targets at Bayern Munich this summer, according to reports.

The ex-Manchester City captain’s shock appointment as Bayern Munich’s new manager was announced at the end of last month, with Kompany joining the Bundesliga giants just after suffering Premier League relegation with Burnley.

Bayern, who were drawn to Kompany because of his impressive coaching philosophy, are set to undergo a major summer overhaul ahead of next season after failing to lift a single trophy last term, with Bayer Leverkusen winning an undefeated Bundesliga crown under Xabi Alonso.

According to the Mirror, Kompany is keen to sign Liverpool and England star Joe Gomez this summer, with Bayern identifying defence as a key area for improvement.

Gomez, who is currently gearing up for England’s Euro 2024 campaign in Germany, enjoyed a fruitful season under Jurgen Klopp last term, chalking up 51 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

Liverpool, who handed Gomez a new five-year deal in 2022, are set to issue a firm hands-off warning to the Bundesliga side, who are reportedly impressed with the 27-year-old’s ability to play across several different positions.

Fellow Englishman Levi Colwill of Chelsea is also believed to be on Bayern Munich’s radar, but the west London club are not open to selling him at this stage.

Colwill and Gomez are both ready for fresh starts at their respective clubs, with Enzo Maresca joining as Chelsea boss and Arne Slot taking over at Anfield following Klopp’s departure last season.

Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah is the final defender on Bayern Munich’s shortlist, with the German having impressed during his side’s Bundesliga triumph last season.

As part of their summer rebuild, Bayern are open to selling six players during the transfer window, with Matthijs De Ligt and Joshua Kimmich leading the list.

Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Noussair Mazraoui are the other four reportedly on the chopping block in Bavaria.
