Erik ten Hag’s best and worst losses in wild ride as Man Utd manager show why it took chiefs so long to make decision

DEVASTATING lows and occasional highs have marked Erik ten Hag’s two-year reign at Manchester United so far.

Third place in 2022-23 was followed by United’s worst ever Premier League finish of eighth the following season.

A 7-0 Prem loss in March last year at the most painful place possible – fierce rivals Liverpool may have been rock bottom.

But there have been memorable European nights and two cup troiumphs – the latter saving Ten Hag’s bacon.

Here’s our guide to the Red Devils’ worst defeats and best wins under the Dutchman.

Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd – March 2023

Just 1-0 down after 50 minutes, United were humiliated like never before at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds ripped them aside with ease on the break.

Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah each netted twice for jubilant Liverpool.

Yet United had gone into the match on a high – 11 games unbeaten and having ended their six-year trophy drought with League Cup glory.

Old Trafford legend Gary Neville labelled skipper Bruno Fernandes a “disgrace” for shocking body language during the shameful second half and appearing to plead to be taken off.

This was United’s heaviest defeat in 92 years.

And Ten Hag responded by calling them in early for training the next day.

Crystal Palace 4-0 Man Utd – May 2024

The Red Devils have rarely looked more dis-United, destroyed by the eager Eagles as reported Old Trafford target Michael Olise netted twice.

Pundit Jamie Carragher slammed Ten Hag’s flops as the “most poorly coached team in the league” and ex-Old Trafford wing-back Ashley Young described the performance as “shambolic”.

After watching defensive blunders confirm United’s misery, Carra even claimed the club’s Under-23s would have got a better result and shown more cohesion.

Nonetheless, Palace were only the second team – along with Manchester City – to do the double over the Red Devils in 2023-24.

Brentford 4-0 Man Utd – August 2022

United were 4-0 down just 35 minutes into Ten Hag’s second game in charge.

Keeper David de Gea’s horrendous error gifted Brentford the opener as the Red Devils made it seven straight away losses – their worst run since 1936.

Ten Hag fumed at what he felt was his players’ lack of fitness.

He ordered them into Carrington the next day for extra training, including running 13.8 kilometres – the distance the Bees had outran them by.

Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (agg 5-2) – April 2023

Cock-up filled capitulations in Europe don’t come much more severe than this.

Alarm bells had sounded at 2-0 up in the first leg – as own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire earned Sevilla a 2-2 draw in the last 10 minutes.

Maguire then gifted the Spaniards their opener in the return – with United offering almost nothing in attack as two further goals dumped them out 5-2 on aggregate.

Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth – December 2023

Arguably Ten Hag’s low point at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke struck early to leave United jittery.

Second-half headers from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi then killed off the Red Devils.

Ten Hag’s woe was compounded by his shock decision to start Anthony Martial backfiring.

Chelsea 4-3 Man Utd – April 2024

United set an unwanted record after losing from 3-2 up in the 100th minute.

Man City old boy Cole Palmer struck twice to complete a hat-trick and nick it for the Blues.

No Prem side had ever lost after leading so late – a feeling made worse for United by the fact they’d come from 2-0 down to go ahead.

Copenhagen 4-3 Man Utd – November 2023

Marcus Rashford’s 42nd-minute red card – after VAR intervened following his late tackle – turned what should have been a cruising win into a bruising sin.

Having looked in command through a Rasmus Hojlund double against his hometown club, the Red Devils then admittedly showed plenty of graft when they went down to 10 men in this Champions League group match.

But 17-year-old sub Roony Bardghji capped Copenhagen’s late turnaround triumph – to virtually dump United out of the competition on a frenzied night.

Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool – August 2022

United came into the game of an opening-day defeat to Brighton and 4-0 demolition by Brentford – see above.

Amid protests over the Glazers, Ten Hag made the bold call to drop Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo.

And he was rewarded with a massive victory – his first in the top-flight at Old Trafford.

Jadon Sancho scored after 16 minutes and Rashford struck after the break, with Salah scoring a late consolation that did little to dampen the optimistic mood at United.

Man Utd 3-1 Arsenal – September 2022

Ten Hag followed the win over Liverpool with 1-0 victories against Southampton and Leicester.

And things only got better as Antony scored on debut to raise already sky-high expectations.

Bukayo Saka levelled but Rashford’s double sunk the high-flying Gunners, who remained top as United moved into fifth.

Antony received a standing ovation as he was replaced by Ronaldo – it may have been the peak of his United career.

Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham – October 2022

That Hugo Lloris was probably Tottenham’s best player on the day sums up just how good this performance was.

United had 19 shots on goal in a devastating first-half display where the only sore point was their failure to beat the in-form Frenchman.

But Fernandes and Fred struck to earn a deserved win in the best showing of Ten Hag’s reign so far.

United were sitting fifth after the win but pundits at the time thought this game was going to prove a real turning point.

Man Utd 2-1 Barcelona – February 2023

After a 2-2 draw in Barcelona, United were in trouble when Robert Lewandowski scored from the spot 18 minutes in.

Ten Hag’s side struggled in the first half but Antony’s introduction at the break in favour of Wout Weghorst sparked them into life.

Fred netted after 47 minutes and his fellow Brazilian added a second to earn a famous 4-3 aggregate win.

It sent United into the Europa League last 16 where they overcame Real Betis before coming unstuck against Sevilla in the quarter-finals.

Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle – February 2023

Ten Hag lifted his first trophy in English football thanks to a deserved win over Newcastle.

Casemiro nodded in the opener from Luke Shaw’s free-kick and a deflected Rashford made it 2-0 at the break.

Newcastle struggled to make an impact and United won their first trophy since Jose Mourinho led them to the Europa League six years previously.

Casemiro’s big-game experience was hailed as one of the biggest factors behind the victory.

Man Utd 4-3 Liverpool (aet) – March 2024

There are numerous reasons why this spectacular win made the list.

From denying Liverpool a shot at a Quadruple, to setting up a Wembley triumph – more on that later – there was plenty to enjoy.

Liverpool were leading the FA Cup quarter-final with 86 minutes played but Antony struck to make it 2-2.

The Reds again took the lead through Harvey Elliott in extra-time but Rashford was on target to tie the game.

And with penalties looming, Amad Diallo struck the biggest goal of his career after 121 minutes to send Old Trafford into raptures.

Man City 1-2 Man Utd – May 2024

With Ten Hag seemingly destined for the chopping block, nobody gave United a chance.

But they were all over the Premier League champions and bitter rivals from the off.

Alejandro Garnacho pounced on a misunderstanding between Stefan Ortega to open the scoring before Kobbie Mainoo rounded off a flowing team move for 2-0.

Andre Onana made some superb saves and despite Jeremy Doku’s late goal, United held on for a trophy that has given Ten Hag a stay of execution.
