RATINGS – Gallagher & Jackson struggle as Chelsea are held by Burnley

Chelsea and Burnley played out a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge which will frustrate both sides as they had opportunities to claim all three points.

Defender Lorenz Assignon was sent off for the visiting Clarets after picking up a second yellow card for bringing down Ukraine’s Euro qualifying hero Mykhailo Mudryk in the penalty box – and Vincent Kompany was also shown his marching orders during the subsequent VAR check.

Cole Palmer dispatched the penalty with a cool panenka finish to put the Blues in front at the break, but Josh Cullen’s first-time hit fired the ball home past Dorde Petrovic for Burnley’s equaliser two minutes into the second-half at the Bridge.

Palmer got a second to put the Blues back in front in the 78th minute, but Dara O’Shea got a crucial header to level up the game three minutes later – with Burnley also hitting the bar late on from another header.

Here’s MailSport’s match ratings from Chelsea 2-2 Burnley:

Chelsea

Dorde Petrovic – got low to deny Cullen. Was the significantly quieter of the two goalkeepers, but was left unable to do anything as Burnley struck the bar late on.

Malo Gusto – added to Chelsea’s injury woes when he pulled up with a hamstring problem late on.

Axel Disasi – scored from close range, but ruled out by VAR after it went in off his elbow.

Benoit Badiashile – the French defender was not able to stop the Clarets from getting two goals, as the frailties of the Blues at the back continue.

Marc Cucurella – booked for cynical foul to deny Burnley a chance to attack in the first half. Otherwise solid, with a header comfortably saved by Muric.

Moises Caicedo – replaced with Sterling for the final quarter of an hour or so, having formed part of a solid defensive midfield line alongside Fernandez.

Enzo Fernandez – had three shots against the Clarets, but couldn’t find a way through from the centre of the hosts’ midfield.

Cole Palmer – Remained calm amid a long wait for confirmation of the penalty, and scored a Panenka with style as Muric dived to his left. Got between the centre-backs for his second goal.

Conor Gallagher – booked in first half stoppage time for one of his fouls. Taken off after just over an hour for Madueke.

Mykhailo Mudryk – brought down for penalty after midweek heroics with Ukraine to send them to Germany in the summer

Nicolas Jackson – missed a great opportunity to take the lead with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Substitutes: Noni Madueke (for Gallagher 62′) – unable to leave much of an impression, after coming on to replace Gallagher for the final half an hour.

Raheem Sterling (for Caicedo 73′) – came off the bench to provide the assist for Palmer’s second with a splendid backheel. Missed a free header to make it 3-2 to the Blues.

Alfie Gilchrist (for Gusto 87′) – called upon for the final few minutes to replace the injured Gusto.

Manager: Mauricio Pochettino – Blues dominated the first half, but only had the penalty to show for it. Top four? What does that make Burnley?

Burnley

Arijanet Muric – 7 – pulled off saves to deny a deflected Fernandez shot onto the bar, and got low to block a Jackson opportunity, and a Mudryk chance, and a Cucurella header, but was fooled by Palmer’s penalty. Heroic second half saves too. Big player.

Lorenz Assignon – 4 – booked for tugging Mudryk, and sent off for bringing down Ukraine’s Euro qualifying hero in the box for the opening goal.

Dara O’Shea – 7 – ran to the near post and sent a thunderous header home for Burnley’s equaliser.

Maxime Esteve – 6.5 – made a strong defensive partnership with O’Shea, and limited Chelsea to half-chances which they could not capitalise upon. Booked in stoppage time for dawdling over a free-kick.

Vitinho – 6.5 – made two successful tackles on the left-side of the defensive backline as Burnley tried to keep the Blues at bay.

Jacob Bruun Larsen – 6 – Dane had a couple of early chances, but couldn’t capitalise. Taken off at half-time for Josh Brownhill.

Josh Cullen – 8 – caught Caicedo with a follow-through to be booked in the first half. Came out after the restart and hit the ball first-time so it flew past Petrovic for Burnley’s equaliser two minutes into the second-half. Turned provider with the corner that set up O’Shea’s equaliser.

Sander Berge – 7 – the Norwegian midfielder put in a solid performance in midfield against a Chelsea side that dominated the game, but not the scoreline.

Wilson Odobert – 7- curled a shot which forced a good save from Petrovic in the opening quarter of an hour. Had a quieter second half before being withdrawn.

Zeki Amdouni – 6 – – unable to do much before being sacrificed for Charlie Taylor after the red card.

Lyle Foster – 7 – had a header chance to give Burnley the lead, but instead Petrovic was able to save. Played 70 minutes before being replaced by Rodriguez.

Substitutes: Charlie Taylor (for Amdouni 45′) – 6 – slotted into the right-back position following the red card.

Josh Brownhill (for Bruun Larsen 46′) – 7 – half-time switch, and immediately turned provider for Cullen’s goal.

Jay Rodriguez (for Foster 70′) – 6 – hit the bar in the dying minutes with a stunning header, leaving Petrovic stranded, but unable to get that crucial winner.

Johann Gudmundsson (for Odobert 70′) – 6 –  alongside Rodriguez in the double substitution, as Burnley tried to see out the game.

Manager: Vincent Kompany – 6.5 – after being sent off during the penalty check, his half-time discussion with the Clarets changed them. A valuable point in the battle against relegation – but will he think they could have got more?
