Van de Ven mocked in a series of memes after slipping twice for Newcastle goals

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been mocked on social media after his two slips in quick succession led to Newcastle goals.

The Dutchman has earned praise during an impressive debut season at Tottenham but endured a nightmare first half at St James’ Park.

Van de Ven was caught out for Newcastle’s opening goal, slipping after being turned by Alexander Isak with the Swedish striker firing the hosts in front in the 30th minute.

Newcastle doubled their advantage two minutes later in similar fashion with Van de Ven again falling to the turf with Anthony Gordon blasting in a second to secure a 2-0 half-time lead.

Rival fans took to social media to lay into Van de Ven’s difficult first half at St James’ Park.

A series of memes were posted of the Dutchman slipping, including one reference to Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip for Liverpool against Chelsea.

Rio Ferdinand, who described Van de Ven as a Rolls-Royce pre-match, admitted the defender had a half to forget.

The former Man United centre back highlighted that the defender had failed to slow down on both occasions leading him to slip.

‘We talked about how good he’s been this season, but today is that’s a 45 minutes to forget,’ Ferdinand said.

‘It is a great bit of skill from your Isak but you’ve got to slow your feet down to defend.

‘If you don’t slow your feet down you can’t then change direction this happens here.

‘He doesn’t change he’s able to change direction because he came across too quick didn’t slow himself down and in the end was put on his bum.’

He added on Gordon’s goal: ‘It  looks worse and worse for Van der Ven every time you see it.

‘He doesn’t slow his feet down, that moment you can’t sit you can’t turn then it makes it so impossible to turn another direction.’

Van de Ven and Tottenham’s nightmare afternoon continued when the Dutchman was caught out by Isak in the second half.

Isak raced away to score Newcastle’s third of the afternoon.
