Leeds Summerville and Ipswich boss McKenna claim top prizes at the EFL Awards

Crysencio Summerville was named the Championship Player of the Season at the EFL Awards 2024 in London.

With 17 goals and eight assists for Leeds United this season, the Dutch winger beat the league’s top scorer, Blackburn’s Sammie Szmodics and Leicester’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to the prize.

‘It’s nice to win. I think I’ve really improved this season. It was the best decision for me (to stay at Leeds) and I really hope we can get promoted,’ said Summerville.

The 22-year-old’s teammate Archie Gray took home the Young Player of the Season award but Kieran McKenna ensured that it wasn’t a Leeds clean sweep as the Ipswich Town boss was named the Manager of the Season, ahead of Leeds boss Daniel Farke and Hull City’s Liam Rosenior.

The Tractor Boys currently lead the Championship with three games to go and McKenna insisted that it was a proud moment for himself and Ipswich.

‘It’s great pride for myself, my family and the whole football club because manager of the year reflects a team that’s done fantastically well and of course, a team doing fantastically well is the outcome of a lot of people’s hard work,’ said McKenna, whose side don’t play again till April 27.

‘We’re on 89 points with three games left but the quality this season is so high and we know we have to win as many points as we can,’ he added.

Gray – who turned 18 last month – was awarded the Young Player accolade by Chris Kamara after a breakout season where he has featured in all but two of Leeds’s Championship games.

‘To play the amount of games I’ve played at this age, I’ve been really lucky with the manager and team-mates that I’ve got,’ he said. ‘Daniel Farke just trusting me and teaching me little things like positioning, especially in a new position at the start of the season, at right-back. I’m really grateful to him,’ added Gray.

In League One, Peterborough’s Harrison Burrows – a week on from scoring a brace to win the Bristol Street Motors Trophy Final – was named as the Player of the Season while his teammate Ronnie Edwards, 21, won the Young Player of the Season. Portsmouth’s John Mousinho took the manager’s accolade – his side can clinch promotion with a draw against Barnsley on Tuesday.

And in League Two, Notts County’s Jodi Jones was named the Player of the Season after delivering a league-record 24 assists and counting while Tranmere Rovers’s Rob Apter, 20, was awarded Young Player of the Season. Mansfield’s Nigel Clough took home the manager’s accolade, with The Stags set for promotion after eleven consecutive seasons in League Two.

Elsewhere, former Ipswich defender Luke Chambers was honoured with the Sir Tom Finney Award for his contribution to football and the league. Chambers made 871 career appearances across all three EFL divisions.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Will Vaulks was named as the EFL Player in the Community for a third time in his career, while Charlton Athletic were recognised as the EFL’s Community Club of the Season.

Meanwhile, Bristol City were awarded the EFL Community Project of the Season for their ADD Mentor Project and former Blackpool midfielder, Paul Stewart, was celebrated for his service to the game when he was presented with the prestigious Contribution to League Football Award.

Stewart has worked closely with the EFL’s Safeguarding team and League Football Education for multiple seasons, carrying out talks to academy players, parents, guardians and staff. He bravely recounts his lived experience of child sexual abuse and the impact it has had on his life and those around him.
