Barcelona veteran edging closer to summer exit following Xavi Hernandez departure

With Hansi Flick set to replace Xavi Hernandez as Barcelona head coach in the coming days, many of the club’s transfer plans have had to be ripped up due to the change of management. This will not only affect possible targets, but also players currently in the first team – one of which is Sergi Roberto.

When it was announced a few weeks ago that Xavi would be staying on, Roberto’s situation looked clear – he was to be offered a new contract, and would remain for an additional 12 months. However, with Flick now taking the reins, his future has been thrown into doubt, as per MD.

Xavi was Roberto’s biggest supporter at Barcelona, which is why it was previously set in stone that he would stay. However, because of his sacking, contract negotiations have cooled with just one month to go until his current deal expires.

Roberto expects to remain at Barcelona, having been assured that he would be given a new contract. However, Flick is now set to have the final say on the matter, so his situation is very unclear.
