Ivan Toney ‘ready for move’ as Erik ten Hag demand emerges

Erik ten Hag is staying at Manchester United, and that means transfer business can fully kick into gear with the Reds needing plenty of signings and sales during the summer window.

United need reinforcements all across the squad, but goals were particularly hard to come by last season with Ten Hag’s side scoring just 57 Premier League goals during the 2023/24 campaign. Money will be tight for United this summer after missing out on Champions League football, but some key sales – such as Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood – could raise some serious funds to reinvest in the squad.

While United are targeting at least one centre-back, a left-back and a central midfielder, a striker is also on the wishlist – but it won’t be Benjamin Sesko, who has opted to sign a new contract at RB Leipzig despite reported interest from United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Ivan Toney has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford and with just a year remaining on his Brentford contract, the forward – currently at Euro 2024 with England – could be a smart option for the Reds.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday regarding his future, Toney said “I’m a Brentford player. I have a year left [at Brentford]. Going into a major tournament, that is my main focus now. But after this, I’ll be going back to Brentford and I will be a Brentford player still. It’s nice to be linked with other clubs. But I’ve had this in the past. Nothing is done until it’s done.”

When pressed on whether he is prepared for a big move if the call comes this summer, Toney replied: “Obviously, if it was to come, I would be ready. But I’ve got to remain focused and not let other things and other noise get the best of me and just focus on what I need to do for my club.”

Meanwhile, Benni McCarthy has worked as an attacking coach for United since 2022 but is coming to the end of his contract this summer. While he admitted that he ‘absolutely adores and loves’ his role at United, he is itching to be a manager.

According to The Times, Ten Hag would like United to hand McCarthy fresh terms after bringing him to Old Trafford in 2022. The Dutch boss sees the former FC Porto and Ajax forward as an integral part of his set-up at United.

Elsewhere, Juventus are said to retain an interest in Jadon Sancho, who is set for an awkward reunion with Ten Hag. The 24-year-old spent the last six months on loan at his former club Borussia Dortmund and helped them to the Champions League final.

Following the news that Ten Hag will remain as manager, there seems to be no future for Sancho at Old Trafford. Dortmund are unable to afford him on a permanent basis however, as they prefer to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea and also have Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy on their list.

According to the Daily Mail, United have made Sancho available for a knockdown price of around £40million following his time on loan in Germany. They are trying to raise transfer funds to spend in the transfer market and also plan to sell Mason Greenwood.

The report adds that United have had approaches from a host of teams with an interest in Sancho, ‘notably’ from Germany and Italy. However, it remains to be seen whether they can meet the financial demands of such a deal.
