Serbia vow to exploit England’s ‘flaws’ exposed in Iceland loss

Harry Kane has warned England that Euro 2024 opponents Serbia are capable of causing a huge upset this Sunday.

The national team face the Serbs in their first game of the tournament in Gelsenkirchen this weekend in a match England are expected to win.

There was good news on Thursday as John Stones returned to training after recovering from a sickness bug that saw him quarantined on Tuesday amid hope he will be fit to start the game.

Stones’ potential presence in will be vital given the omission from the squad of Harry Maguire due to injury.

Maguire’s aerial power has been crucial for England over the previous three tournaments and his absence arrived as blow.

Indeed, Kane has warned that Serbia’s abilities in the air can cause England major problems on Sunday.

Former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – who is 6ft 2ins and renowned for his heading ability – could lead the line for Serbia and captain Kane said: ‘They’re a team that can hurt you if you’re not set up correctly and defensively they’re really strong.

‘They make it difficult for us with their moves and they have tall players so they can be very dangerous.

‘If we’re not careful it could be a difficult game for us so we need to make sure we get that right.’

Meanwhile, Serbia defender Strahinja Pavlović insists his team will go for the jugular against England.

‘If I were to ask myself, and if I could decide about it, I would attack the English. I would go up there and try to press them.

‘Everyone has flaws, even the English. We saw how organised Iceland was able to threaten and defeat them. We are analysing everything.’
