Mykhailo Mudryk became a Ukrainian hero as he scored the 84th-minute winner to send his side to Euro 2024 at the expense of Iceland.

The Chelsea star, 23, completed Ukraine’s turnaround, after they had fallen behind to Albert Gudmundsson’s goal after half an hour had gone in the playoff.

Viktor Tsyhankov had levelled proceedings ten minutes after the restart, but they had to hold on until Mudryk’s winner – becoming the only play-off winner to seal their win in normal time, and earning a message from Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Zelenskiy said on Telegram: ‘Thank you boys! Thank you to the team! For proving once again that when Ukrainians face challenges but refuse to give up and continue the fight, they invariably win.’

Both of Tuesday’s other victors, Georgia and Poland, had to win penalty shootouts to see off Greece and Wales respectively – but Ukraine achieved it in 90 minutes.
