Luis Enrique’s treatment of Kylian Mbappé (25) has ruffled some feathers during his short time in France. The Paris Saint-Germain coach since Mbappé announced his decision to leave at the end of the season been reluctant to let his star player start and finish Ligue 1 games.

There has been a theme of prepping for the future from the Spanish manager and a wish to prepare for life post-Mbappé before the forward has even left the club. How successful this has been is up for debate, results have faltered in the league in recent weeks, although in Le Classique yesterday evening Mbappé’s substitution led to Gonçalo Ramos’s (22) goal-scoring entrance.

Ramos scored the goal which put the game out of sight for Olympique de Marseille and meant that PSG’s dominance over their rivals continued for another season. However, despite the substitution leading to results, tension once again rose from a decision to take the star man off.

Luis Enrique was visibly annoyed when asked about his decision, stressing that he was the coach and he would make the choices for his team. However, if the coach is becoming annoyed by the questions, then some journalists are becoming annoyed by his answers.

Daniel Riolo speaking on After Foot stated, “My first criticism is his nonsense communication.” The journalist continued, “Two: his choices.” Riolo believes that the team would be a far more threatening team if they kept Mbappé on the pitch.

He also maintains doubts that Luis Enrique is the right man for the role at the capital club, with Riolo pointing towards his early statements “I can’t stand when he arrives at PSG and says Barcelona is his favourite club and there are four or five players that would get into the PSG team, we didn’t need to hear that. If he had said that at Marseille, they would have turned the stadium upside down.”

Riolo finished with a stinging statement on the former Champions League-winning manager, “His career doesn’t show that he’s a genius.”
